What is PVD Coating?

What is PVD coating?

PVD (physical vapor deposition), is a vacuum coating process that produces a brilliant decorative and functional finish. PVD utilizes a titanium nitride that provides an extremely durable coating. PVD coatings are more resistant to corrosion from sweat and regular wear than gold plating or gold filled. Luxury brands like Rolex and Cartier use PVD plating because of it’s beautiful gold finish and durability!

Is there actual gold in PVD Coating?

Yes! PVD coating can be done in two ways; with actual gold (9kt, 14kt, 18kt or 24kt) or with other elements that can produce a ‘gold color’. Lucinda Jewelry proudly only uses the 18k gold method and does not cause reactions in contact with the skin.

What is the difference between PVD coating and gold plating?

Gold plating occurs when a thin layer of real gold is plated onto another metal, such as stainless steel. One of the advantages of gold-plating is that it gives the product the look of real gold at a cheap price. However, gold plating doesn’t offer the durability of gold PVD coating and can discolor within a short amount of time and reveal the base metal. PVD on the other hand, rather than being simply dipped in gold, real 18k gold is applied and infused with the metal using an electric machine and is best described as vacuumed sealed on. This creates not only a beautiful finish, but it is more durable than stainless steel!

What is the difference between PVD coating and gold filled?

Gold filled jewelry is an upgraded version of gold plated jewelry, using much thicker plating. Iit is more expensive and will last longer than gold plated, but will still eventually fade (typically in 6 months - 1 year) because it is applied in the same process as plating. PVD provides increased hardness and excellent wear resistance because 18k gold is infused with the metal.

So what’s best for me?

  • PVD is for “every day” wearers that want the look of solid gold at a much more affordable cost. It will last a lifetime and can be worn swimming, ocean, shower, gym, and more.
  • Gold filled is best for those who have a larger budget to spend, and the jewelry can be resistant to chlorine damage and ocean damage if you give them a rinse and wipe them when coming out of the water. Not recommended for the gym as equipment can scratch your jewelry.
  • Gold plated is best for those who want the most affordable option and not for everyday use.

Does PVD Coating rust?

PVD Coating on jewelry offers resistance to corrosion, rust, and other environmental anomalies.
